I know, I know. Cheating on the letter “I”? Not even on a hard letter like Q or X? Well, I have extras for Q, and X came easily, but I couldn’t find an “I” anywhere. (There’s I Was Kidnapped by Lesbian Pirates from Outer Space, but try as I might, I couldn’t find a copy of that to read!) This is a good problem, though, because I was absolutely determined to find a letter where I could talk about the excellent webcomic Band vs. Band, written and drawn by Kathleen Jacques. And the “I” is an important syllable in Turpentine’s name, after all!
I’ve mentioned Band vs. Band before, and I will once again use Only Fragments‘ description: It’s about “lady-fronted rival bands set in a Josie and the Pussycats-esque universe, only way more queer.” There are lots of LGBT+ plots going on with the supporting characters, but the best part is the love/hate relationship between the two leads, Honey Hart of the Candy Hearts and Turpentine of the Sourballs. Honey Hart plays sweet, optimistic, funsy tunes, while Turpentine is “a few deadly chords & one raspy scream.” They hate each other. Don’t they? Hehehe…
The art is adorable and a bit retro, and the tone kind of reminds me of old Archie Comics stuff. Simple, wholesome, golly-gee-whiz comics… only this comic is about sex-n-drugs-n-rock-n-roll. I mean seriously, that’s like my entire life in a sentence, how can I not love this?
Since I’ve spent a couple days on long character backstories for superheroes, today I’ll keep it short. One more pic for the road:

DUDE. I tracked down this post of yours just to let you know that I just learned Turpentine is Chinese, which I think is super fucking cool and yay diversity!

Thanks for introducing me to this web comic. It’s not like I can see web comics because I’m blind, but I love to learn about them. Btw, I only have three days and still need to come up with something for K in my A to Z (at least, something that I can write an accessible post on).

I wish there was an audio version!
Hm. You could cheat a bit and just use a word with K in it, like “Speak” or “Work.” Or maybe there’s a famous autistic person whose name begins with K?

This one looks like fun! And I like the visual samples. For some reason gave me a Scott pilgrim flashback…

You’re right, it’s very Scott Pilgrim-y too! I just much prefer Band vs. Band. Nothing against Pilgrim, I just never had any particular attachment to that series.

I was thinking Scott Pilgrim as well!

I am finding the vowels to be the most difficult letters so far. Coincidence I am sure but still…

“Would you like to buy a vowel?” “YES YES I WOULD.” Didn’t notice until you mentioned it, but my vowels are either cheats like this one or I only had one option, whereas with the consonants I usually had a couple to choose from…

I think in my case, where I got suggestions, everyone wanted to be the one to stump me on Q, X, etc. I got more than one “I” response but they were already being used in other blogs and Ididn’t want to repeat or I just couldn’t come up with something. I view today’s post of mine as a throw away 😀

I struggled with I, K, and N the most, but Q and X were never an issue. Thank goodness for my guest bloggers!

I know right! It can be, y’know, an accident. We don’t have to drive straight into coupledom, just a little escalation would be fine.
(Who am I kidding they can tease me all they want… 😉 )

Haha, I know, I know. In the meantime I’ll just enjoy Arsenic making out with literally everyone.

Y’know, that’s one of the things Honey and Turpentine have in common: they’re both members of the No Possible Circumstance Where This Character Would Make Out With Arsenic Club.

We’ll overlook the ‘I’ issue given the cool reference and the introduction to an interesting character! I’m struggling with X, and a few of the other letters. Not necessarily the creatures, but the fact they don’t appear in media!

I’ll be interested in your thoughts on how they might be incorporated into media, in that case! 🙂
