Birthday Book Tag!

It’s my birthday! I’m 27 today. I’m going to see The Happytime Murders and get some food and have a great time today. And I saved a birthday-themed book tag for like 11 months, so here it is.

Count your birth day along your bookshelf and then subtract your birth month. What book does your finger land on?

The Beggar Queen by Lloyd Alexander! A childhood favorite. I linked to the series, because it’s the third in a trilogy and the description has spoilers.

If you could spend your birthday with any fictional character, who would it be and why?

I’m… gonna steal Nevillegirl’s answer and say Skulduggery Pleasant. (In fact, I see I said as much in the comments on her post.) He’s a skeleton. He’s a magician. He’s sarcastic and intense and he knows a good time when he sees it and he’s got a sweet Bentley for us to ride around in, and we’d probably get trapped in a villain’s plot and that would be super exciting.

Honorable mentions: Superman and Harry Vanderspeigle.

Find a book that takes place during the season you were born in.

It’s summer, so there’s no end to the summer flings, endless surrealist summers, summers abroad… The most recent book I’ve read that I can definitively say is set during one summer is Emiko Superstar by Mariko Tamaki. I’ve been making my way through the Minx Comics titles I missed back when that was a thing — it was a kind of manga-inspired DC Comics imprint targeted toward young women — and Emiko Superstar is one of their successes. It’s structured like a geek-becomes-popular story, but her popularity isn’t at school or a mainstream performance club, it’s at one of those gross hipstery warehouse venues where people do performance art. I actually just went to a show like that recently, an indie puppet show because I’m a puppet nerd, so I enjoyed the book all the more, but it was really good anyway.

Find a book that is the color of your birthstone.

My birthstone is peridot, which is kind of a light lime green. How about an assortment from my TBR?

Is there a series with the same number of books as your age? If so, what is it?

According to Google there are several, but the most charming is a kids’ series called Black Lagoon Adventures.

Pick a book set in a time period, world, or country you would like to have been born in.

My answer to this is always Star Trek. So, I’ll pick my ongoing favorite Trek-related book, the Vulcan travel guide by Dayton Ward. (Still trying to get the Klingon one…)

I tag anyone with a birthday!
