Review: “Original Sin: Thor & Loki – The Tenth Realm”

How’s that title for word salad? Let’s jump right in — Loki: Agent of Asgard took a brief detour into Thor & Loki for its Original Sin tie-in. The main Original Sin storyline is very good and worth a read. It’s just got the two-word title, and you’ll get a complete story in that volume. You’ll appreciate it most if you’re somewhat familiar with Marvel lore and characters, but you could probably get by with just movie knowledge. All you really need to know for this tie-in, though, is that someone unleashed a kind of “secrets bomb” on the Avengers and Thor learned he has a sister.

I do my Loki reviews in the form of live reactions as I go along, paying special attention to Loki’s possible genderfluidity/bisexuality/etc. Since this is a whole volume at once instead of just one issue, I just won’t react to quite as much. Skip to the Final Thoughts to avoid spoilers!

____

Original Sin The Tenth Realm cover

I’m not gonna lie… That cover is extremely hot. But I hope Angela turns out to be more than that.

____

Original Sin The Tenth Realm

Yeah, yeah, we’d all do Thor. Let’s get to the revelations.

____

Original Sin The Tenth Realm

Apparently ladies can be heirs in Asgard, so that’s cool.

But Freyja tells a sob story about how the Tenth Realm killed the baby (because Odin was being a jerkface, apparently), and then Odin banished the Tenth Realm. Why do I not trust Freyja to tell the whole truth? And I’m not sure Thor does either… He stomps out, saying, “No. She lives. And there is one in this family who will help me find her.” We all know who that is…

____

Original Sin The Tenth Realm Thor and Loki

Awwww, Loki says “you” but Thor says “we…”

____

Yay, Guardians of the Galaxy! (I’m a big fan of the old series — well, the middle series — but I haven’t had a chance to read the newer stuff, so I don’t know Angela yet.)

____

Original Sin The Tenth Realm Thor and Loki

Hehehe. Also, it’s super cool how the art style changes in the Tenth Realm, although I still prefer the normal style.

Battle ensues!

And the denizens of the TR are some creepy-ass angels. They’re vicious and they have skulls on their chairs. They all seem to be women so far.

____

Obligatory Thor vs. Angela fisticuffs, while Loki gets the dirt from the angel queen. Basically Odin is a jerkface, but so is the queen. Summaries by Hannah G — you’re welcome. 😉

Loki saves Thor from the epic beatdown he’s receiving — by joining the enemy! Oh noes! I suspect another plot.

Original Sin The Tenth Realm Loki

____

Original Sin The Tenth Realm Loki

Yep. She’s awesome. Handles the whole thing without breaking a sweat. Thor gets a badass scene too, to be fair!

____

Original Sin The Tenth Realm Angela

Original Sin The Tenth Realm Loki

The art on Angela is just. gorgeous. She’s also a really interesting character, a warrior who uses the word “Asgardian” as a casual metaphor for “the worst demons you can imagine,” and then discovers she’s an Asgardian herself.

____

And lastly…

Original Sin The Tenth Realm

“And I love you.”

Final Thoughts:

This book stayed very straightforward. In a story about secrets, I would’ve liked to see more real surprises. However, it’s well done, and it has all the same great characters I’ve been loving. I don’t know why Angela has to wear a metal bikini, but other than that her art is amazing and she’s a compelling character. She has her own series now, Angela: Asgard’s Assassin, three issues in, so I’ll probably be checking that out when the first volume is collected. And, of course, we’ve finally made it explicit that Loki is both male and female, so I’m really pleased with that and excited to see where it goes from here!

  1. Every time – EVERY time – I read your reviews I end up wanting the book. This one’s no different. You do great reviews.

Also, that cover: is she just wearing a belt as pants? Is that a thing folks can do?

I double-checked: She IS just wearing a belt as pants!

    1. Glad you enjoy them! I try to review things I want people to read, so I’m glad it’s working. 😉

Yep. Belt as pants. Apparently that is a thing that folks can do if a) they are semi-impervious warriors and b) they have an enormous freakin’ belt.
