It suddenly occurred to me that it would be a good idea to quantify the diversity of my reading last year and try to do better this year… So I’m including it as one of my reading challenges. It’s not an official challenge, but hey, if you wanna do it we can make it one!
Diverse Reading 2014:
- Total books read: 165(ish)
- Women: 33 female protagonists and 46 female authors
- POC: 21 books of racial diversity (author or protagonist)
- LGBT+: 10 books (super low for me, weird)
- Disability: 2 books, both nonfiction (plus some comics with Professor X in them)
The disability issue only really got on my radar this year, so I’ve got a lot more books lined up to read for that in 2015.
Other than that, I really can’t think of much to update at the moment. Bloggers, check out #1000Speak. It’s a project for people to post about compassion on February 20. I’m tentatively signed up at the moment. I may be somewhat ambivalent, but clearly a lot of people are excited, so you might wanna give it a go!
Posts this week will include a short story and a Pamela post, also possibly a review. Have a good one!

Thanks! I do indeed. I’m not sure why the number was so low last year, except that I was experimenting with some new genres (like romance) so there wasn’t as much room for my usual reading.
I actually just wrote Captive Prince down from your top ten list! Looks like it’s right up my alley! 😀
I always like to return recommendations… My favorite M/M book is Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner. It’s more of a fantasy novel about a gay couple than a romance novel, but the two guys are my favorite couple ever. 😀 You also might like the ebook Treasured Prince by Yamila Abraham, which came to mind immediately when I read the Captive Prince description.

You’ve so out-read me. I doubt I’ve read 20 books this whole year.
What I would love to know is how many words I have read on the Internet. Would be many, many books’ worth, I am sure.

This is such a low number for me, before I was in college I read around 250 per year or more. I’m told I’m a fast reader.
That would be a staggering number indeed, and I’m sure you’d bow me out of the water with that one! 🙂

I used to read one a week before I discovered the Internet megalomania. Just got no time for books these days except very special ones.
Too many struggling indie authors and worthy bloggers with too-small audiences need readers. And reading them gets me friends 😉
But even one a week is nowhere near what you are doing. You are, indeed, a fast reader.

I don’t read enough novels yet to make it worth specifically going for diversity beyond more than one genre. However, most of the books I read last year were written by women. In fact, only 1 of the 12 books I read last year was written by a man, and that was 1 of the 4 books I read last year with main protagonist being male. So if I’m going for more diversity on that front, I should read more books this year that are written by or starring men? Or maybe I could just consider it counter balance for the fact that both movies and games love to hold women back and stick with that pattern.
Unless you specifically look for it, it’s hard to find fiction about disabled people – that’s something I should try to do for some of my wildcard spots on my reading schedule for the year.

Heh, good for you! I’m actually really surprised by how few books I read with female protagonists/authors, so I want to keep an eye on it. But if your choices are random regarding gender and you end up with a good balance, sometimes more of one and sometimes more of the other, I say “Why fix what ain’t broke.” 🙂
My friend Rose (http://rosebfischer.wordpress.com) posted a lot about disability in the past year, which brought it to my attention. Let me know if you find any good stuff! I’ve got things on my TBR list, but I don’t have my list with me… The one I’m really excited about is older New Warriors comics which featured Silhouette, a mutant (I think) who has an unrelated physical disability.
